As a long-time resident of North Carolina, one benefit that I think is under-appreciated are all the great city amenities that are free to the public. From the NC Museum of Arts, to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, and more, these institutions are usually free admission or may be a suggested contribution for entry. One standout city option is the amazing Pullen Park located off of Western Boulevard just west of downtown Raleigh. Opened in 1887 and renovated in 2011, Pullen Park is a 66-acre hidden gem for locals and visitors alike. Here’s why!
Enter Pullen Park and past its gates you’ll pass a cluster of green building for Pullen Park Cafe and to the right a large playground area for the kids. If you continue to the left, you’ll take the walkway around Lake Howell, a small man-made lake with a submerged fountain in the middle. Walk around the perimeter of the lake and then head on over the wooden bridge past the island gazebo. This bridge has a great view of the lake and is often used for prom and wedding pictures!
You’ll soon hit the boat house where pedal boats can be rented out ($7.00 for up to 4 people) and navigate the lake. A little further in and you’ll find the Pullen Park Dentzel carousel. A lovingly restored carousel built in 1911, it only costs $2 for a ride!
Next up is the loading area for the C.P. Huntington miniature train! Built to 1/3 scale of a real locomotive, this classic choo-choo takes you around Pullen Park for a $2 ticket. A fun and relaxing way to enjoy the entire park in one loop with the kids. Or if you just feel like a kid!
And after all the fun you can have, stop in at the Pullen Park Cafe where you can enjoy burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and pizza. The menu is family-friendly and affordable. All in all, I can’t imagine a better city park in the area, or maybe the entire state. From March to November, this idyllic and fun destination is an amazing option for some fresh air and fun.
And don’t miss the special events at Pullen Park. One of the most anticipated events is the Holiday Express, which kicks off in December.
