If you enjoy vintage used books and music, McKays is usually the store of choice in North Carolina. But how about something that’s a lot more personal, fun and unique for the NC Triangle area? One newer option that is absolutely awesome is the Newsagent’s on Fayetteville Street in Raleigh.
The Newsagent’s, Raleigh – Location, Interior
Located on the Oak City’s main downtown drag (Fayetteville Street), the Newsagent’s transformed a historic space into a cozy community storefront for lovers of kitschy, old-school media. You can’t miss the classic striped awning up front along with pressed letter font that sits above it. Open the weathered front door and it gets even better inside!

The shotgun-style building means that the Newsagent’s runs long and deep and features very high ceilings, making for a wonderful place to browse their goods. In the front room you’ll find books, magazines and other printed media. In the middle room it’s mostly music and other AV type media (video games, CDs, DVDs) and more. And in the back room, comic books and graphic novels. And while the walls are filled with shelves to display all the great merchandise, Newsagent’s has plenty of nook and crannies to sit down and make yourself comfortable for longer stretches.

Grab a couch or sit down at the music listening center (LPs, CDs) if you’d like to relax a bit. Or head upstairs to a fun little sitting room replete with 70s decor. It overlooks the entire store if you’d like to get a birds-eye view of Newsagent’s!

And if you need a coffee or snack, they’ve got you covered there, too. A fun little coffee stand with retro graphics if you need some caffeine. A playful display of old-school candies in the ubiquitous milk-crate shelving fulfills your need for sugar. The Newsagent’s was built as a community hub as much as it is a retail store, very cool!

So whether you’re into books, music, movies, or coffee, you’ll be taken care of here! I love the fact that they put so much time and thought into renovating this classic building into a special spot for the city of Raleigh. The Newsagent’s has surprises all around the space and is filled with as much love and thoughtfulness along with all the books and media on the shelf. Don’t miss this spot if you’re exploring downtown Raleigh!
