Have you ever wondered what a “whirligig” is? Just a nonsensical, imaginary thing? Or maybe just a fun word that rolls off your tongue when you’re really excited. Or maybe it’s something thats real? Well, I can tell you for sure that whirligigs are real and you can find some amazing whirligigs in Wilson, NC at the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park.

By definition, “whirligigs” are toys that spin around like a pinwheel but as they get more sophisticated, it seems they become known as kinetic sculptures! And Wilson NC native, Vollis Simpson was a master at whirligigs, turning these kinetic sculptures into true art. And at the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park, you can enjoy a display of 30 of his whirligigs, just make sure you pick a day with a decent breeze to visit.

Walking through the park you’ll see a jet plane, ferris wheel, and much more, spinning lazily above you. With bright colors, interesting designs, and rotating features you’ll find yourself amused by the creativity behind some of these sculptures!

Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park also runs regular events and celebrations in this large park. A farmer and artisan market is also hosted regularly at this park. Casita Brewing Co. also sits across the street if you’d like a beer after exploring. And the classic Parker’s Barbecue is about two miles down the road if you want to grab lunch.

So enjoy a walk and these fantastical kinetic sculptures at the Whirligig Park! It’s a one of a kind venue and worth a stop and visit if you’re visiting Wilson. Check out their website for an upcoming event for the area.
