There’s something about old-school barbeque joints that I just really enjoy! And Southern Smoke fits that description to a T. While lauded by local chefs and foodies, getting to Southern Smoke is off the beaten path, in the downtown area (tiny) of Garland NC. But if you’re headed down to Wilmington and its nearby beaches, it’s worth the side trip, here’s why…

If you’re headed east on I-40, Southern Smoke is about a 35 mile detour along the way. You’ll cut through the sleepy little town of Garland and park across the street on the grass, Cross the street to a small brick storefront which Southern Smoke sits behind. Super utilitarian inside, chalkboard menu to the right and you can see the prep area behind the counter. The menu is focused on pork: barbeque, ribs, chicken, and pork nuggets. Choose from four sides (cole slaw, beans, potato salad, mac n cheese) and then enjoy your food under cover at their patio in back! The main patio table is actually a vintage vehicle with wood surface wrapped around it or you can grab a metal 2-top.

The barbeque is tender, smokey, and lightly seasoned, it’s not super vinegary and the meat is pulled versus chopped. It shows off a great smoke ring and flavor. The ribs are excellent, served a bit crispy and with good bark, the marinade used here is wonderful. And Southern Smoke’s mac n cheese is stellar, toothsome macaroni with tremendous flavor and cheese, do not miss it. All in all Southern Smoke is worth the drive and visit if you’re in the area. Really well done barbeque at a good price. Just be aware that they are only open Thursdays and Fridays for lunch from 11:30 to 3pm, enjoy! Check on their Instagram to make sure they are serving that week.
